The more you know...Bicycle Safety in the City of Boardman
Bicycles are a fun and healthy way to travel around Boardman. Riders may use bicycle paths, streets, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Everyone must ride in a safe and careful way.
- When riding a regular bicycle on a sidewalk:
- Give people walking the right of way.
- Slow down when passing someone.
- Give a friendly warning, such as saying, “Passing on your left.”
- Ride at walking speed near driveways, crosswalks, ramps, and street crossings.
- Watch for cars entering or leaving driveways.
- Do not ride in a way that could hurt someone or damage property.
Regular bicycles may be ridden on sidewalks when these safety rules are followed. However, electric bikes are not allowed on sidewalks under Oregon law. Electric bikes should be ridden in bicycle lanes, on bicycle paths where allowed, or on the street.
Oregon law has three classes of electric bikes:
- Class 1: The motor helps only when you pedal. The motor stops helping at 20 miles per hour.
- Class 2: The motor can move the bike without pedaling, usually by using a throttle. The motor stops helping at 20 miles per hour.
- Class 3: The motor helps only when you pedal. The motor stops helping at 28 miles per hour, and the bike must have a speedometer.
A person must be at least 16 years old to operate an electric bike in Oregon.
Please remember to ride slowly, stay alert, follow traffic signs, and be kind to others. By sharing sidewalks, paths, and streets safely, we can help make Boardman a safe place for everyone.
Mayor's Message
Fire season is upon us, and Oregon is already experiencing significant wildfire activity. I would like to commend the citizens of Boardman for your diligence in keeping your yards and vacant lots clear of weeds and other fire hazards. The City's policy addressing the maintenance of vacant lots is making a positive difference, and I appreciate everyone who is doing their part to help keep Boardman clean and safe.
Road work on North East Front Street continues to progress quickly. Our crews are working hard to construct a new roadway, sidewalks, and updated street lighting. This new infrastructure will not only enhance future development in the area but also improve access and transportation throughout our great city.
If you've visited City Park recently, you may have noticed construction underway. That's the future home of our new splash pad, and we're excited to see this project come to life. In the meantime, don't worry—the splash pad on North Front Street will remain open until the new facility is completed.
Finally, I encourage everyone to stay involved in our community. Share your ideas with the City Council, serve on a local board or committee, and take an active role in shaping Boardman's future. Your involvement and dedication are essential as we continue building a community we can all be proud of.
